A Tale of a City and Its People

The Annals of Dublin by E.E. O’Donnell with photographs from the Father Browne collection tells the story of Dublin from pre-history to the recession of 2008.

Dublin – the great survivor – has seen enormous expansion over the years of the Celtic Tiger, some desirable, some not. Still, a city that has survived Vikings, Normans, Cromwellians will survive anything. There were golden ages and depressions, palaces and slums – and who is to say that all of these are not still in existence. The result is a city with a unique character, beloved by its inhabitants, rich and poor, and of its great laureate, James Joyce – this book features a page full of names invented for Dublin by Joyce in Finnegans Wake. Like Cleopatra, ‘Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale her infinite variety.’

The Annals of Dublin reconstructs the evolution of Dublin and provides a memoir of its great occasions, interspersed with day-to-day detail. Dublin’s origins and development; buildings and streetways; citizens; ‘characters’; architects; politicians; workers; revolutionaries and religious, noble or otherwise – all these constituents of the city’s magnificent and unique personality are blended in meticulous detail, the result of years of reading and research. The book is illustrated by the wonderful photographs of Father Frank Browne who now has twenty books to his name, four of them from Currach Press.

The Annals of Dublin is published by Currach Press in hardback at €30. E.E. O’Donnell is available for interview and all the images in the book are available in high resolution to use.
