Life Story of Ireland's first GAA Superstar

As well as telling the life story of Dick Fitzgerald, Ireland's first Gaelic superstar, this volume contains a facsimile of his 1914 bestseller How to Play Gaelic Football, the first ever GAA instruction manual, reproduced here after 94 years. How to play Gaelic football is an original classic written for Gaelic hurlers and footballers in Ireland and all over the world.

Kerry author Tom Looney chronicles a superlative sporting career that later branched into coaching, refereeing and administrative roles at club, county, Munster and national levels. Fitzgerald won four Kerry county championships, three Croke Cups (as captain) and five senior All Irelands in a career seriously disrupted by flying column adventures. As a Sinn Fein councillor who sided with Michael Collins post-treaty he spent 1916 in five different prison camps. He masterminded Kerry victories from a Frongoch P.O.W. camp, the USA and in the home provinces. Dick Fitzgerald was a larger than life sportsman who also found time to play with Cork's famed ÒNilsÓ and in 1917 lead Clare into a Croke Park football final against Wexford. King in a Kingdom of Kings brings his heroic exploits to a wider audience.

Fitzgerald died tragcailly aged 48 on All Ireland weekend 1930. The funeral was postponed as many Kerry fans were already making their way to Dublin when the accident happened. That weekend Kerry won their ninth senior title and returned home to bury their King.

Killarney's Fitzgerald Stadium is an enduring monument to a great Kerry sportsman and patriot; King in a Kingdom of Kings is a record of his life and achievements for lovers of Gaelic games in Kerry and throughout the world.

Dick Fitzgerald: King in a Kingdom of Kings is published by Currach Press on 13 June 2008, priced at EUR 19.99.

The book will be launched at Dr Croke's Clubhouse, Killarney on Friday, 13 June at 8pm.
